A Brand New Communicable “Disease” That Could Save the World

With the recent discussion of the Swine Flu and possibility of it’s swift transmission through the world’s population, it seems a good idea to consider a different type of virus – one that many people could stand to “catch” and would be better off for it.

As you likely already know, when an individual is infected with a virus, 2 things are typically true. ONE – they exhibit the very same (or very similar) symptoms as the individual who was their “infector”. TWO – It won’t take long before they will almost certainly infect numerous others with the exact same virus, thereby causing them to display very similar symptoms all over again. These two characteristics of a typical virus are exactly what I would like to discuss with you here regarding a brand new virus that has the potential to “heal the world” (or at least a large part of it).

Why Would You Pay it Back If It’s Possible to Pay it Forward Instead?

Many people know the phrase “pay it forward” and many would probably attribute this phrase to the 2000 movie of the same name in which the phrase “Paying it Forward” meant that, in exchange for a good deed that you’ve received, you should do something nice for three new people.

However, this “pay it forward” idea is nowhere near new (nor was it when the book was authored). It actually pre-dates even the well respected Ben Franklin who described “paying it forward” with the following words:

“I do not pretend to give such a Sum; I only lend it to you. When you [...] meet with another honest Man in similar Distress, you must pay me by lending this Sum to him; enjoining him to discharge the Debt by a like operation, when he shall be able, and shall meet with another opportunity. I hope it may thus go thro’ many hands, before it meets with a Knave that will stop its Progress. This is a trick of mine for doing a deal of good with a little money.”

Of course, Ben Franklin’s words above refer to the act of lending money to an individual in need, understanding that they should not repay the money to YOU, but, instead will, when they are financially able, lend an equal sum of money to another individual in need, thereby “paying it forward”. But, this chain of good deeds does not always involve money, nor even physical labor, such as raking leaves or painting an aging home, although, certainly, it could. I’m trying to take a much simpler approach to this idea with the WhyTheCards.com website.

Everybody Needs Encouragement and Appreciation

A century ago, Charles Schwab was named by Andrew Carnegie to be the president of the new United States Steel Company. Schwab’s starting pay: $1,000,000 per year or approximately $3,000 per DAY (at a time when a $3,000 ANNUAL salary was considered to be very good pay).

This gargantuan salary was a result of Schwab’s impeccable ability to effectively deal|deal|effectively interact) with individuals, according to Schwab himself. He had this to say:

Said Schwab, “I consider my ability to arouse enthusiasm among my people the greatest asset I possess, and the way to develop the best that is in a person is by appreciation and encouragement.”

The purpose of WhyTheCards.com is to use that powerful idea of recognizing and appreciating people’s gifts and apply it in a really simple manner which can quickly “infect” dozens, hundreds, thousands or even millions of people and turn them into chronic encouragers, always looking for ingenious ways to affirm and uplift the people around them.

As Simple as Mailing a Greeting Card

It is difficult to imagine why a simple piece of heavy cardstock paper with an photo and a message can have such a powerful positive effect on a person that’s been going through a difficult situation (or maybe even if they haven’t). Just the simple act of letting them know how much you appreciate them and the talents they possess. Or, a word of congratulations for acing a test.

You could even send a note to suggest that you’d like to get together for breakfast this Wednesday or to tell them not to make dinner this Friday since you’ll be preparing it for them. Even better, use your card as a way to encourage them to pay it forward and help someone else. As illogical as it may seem, helping someone else is often one of the most effective ways to make YOURSELF feel better (although that should never be your primary motivation).

Most people could use a reminder that they are truly special and have value. That they have gifts that not a single other person on earth has which should be used to help people. It doesn’t matter how young or how old they are, how sick they might be, how stressful their life may currently be, how many screw-ups they have under their belt, they STILL have a great deal to offer, but nobody will know that unless they actually offer it. It need not even require alot of time or money to encourage someone. A very simple card can mean alot and might be just what the doctor ordered.
