Main Attractions of New York City

Friday, December 4th, 2009

For many people, New York is like the most important or fun place to be. Because of its metropolitan nature, New York is where most suburban dwellers want to go visiting. Besides this, it is also a hub of business activities as you have the famed Wall Street located there, and the twin towers. Recent estimates have shown that New York generates more than some third world countries budget per year. It also has the highest number of skyscrapers concentrated in one territory.

Often dubbed an ‘urban jungle’, it is home to more than 20 million people and amazingly, the metropolitan state seems to have more room for visitors, business executives, vacationers and tourists. New York City has a lot of attractions. In fact, it is said that you could spend three years in New York doing nothing except sightseeing and still not see every vacation spot or attraction sites. Some of New Yorks main attractions are partly responsible for its global popularity and these include:

1. Statue of Liberty This statue represents or symbolizes democracy in the modern world. According to history, the statue signified hope for the immigrants who crossed through Ellis Island. A gift from the French government over a hundred years ago, it was meant to signify freedom which America stands for. Sculpted by the Frdric-Auguste Bartholdi, the steel Framework was built by the creator of the Eiffel tower, Gustav Eiffel and is about 305 ft altogether. To get to the top of the statue, a visitor would have to climb three hundred and fifty four steps. Tourists interested in getting into the monument can purchase one time tickets.

2. Empire State Building The empire state building is possibly the most popular building in New York. Once called the tallest building in the world -it is about one thousand, two hundred and fifty feet high -and named the 8th wonder of the world, many say it signifies or represents what was meant to be carried out when man decided to build the tower of Babel. The empire state building became extremely popular after the movie King Kong was shot in 1933. At the time, it was dubbed the tallest building. However, the mystery surrounding it still counts for visits from over two million visitors annually.

3. Central Park This major tourist centre occupies three hundred and forty one hectares of land is synonymous with its name in its location at the centre of Manhattan. Located between 5th and 8th avenue, central park consists of ice rinks for those who want to skate, theatres, baseball fields, fountains, lakes, a Zoo, a museum, tennis courts and a host of facilities. And the best part of central park is access to it is free of charge. A must see as part of a New York City vacation package.

4. Fifth Avenue For those who love shopping, 5th Ave is an awesome place to be. Located between the 49th and 59th streets, its like a concentration of designer stores such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Ferragamo, Prada and Versace. If you are looking for jewelleries, you will find Bulgari shops, Cartier and a host of other jewellers.

The Hook Ball – Mastering the Technique of Hooking the Bowling Ball

Friday, December 4th, 2009

You, like many bowlers, likely started out bowling by using a point and shoot technique, or a “straight shot”. This simple technique can be surprisingly effective, and you can, in fact, bowl an excellent score using it.

Regardless of how effective it is, if you want to become more serious about bowling, and bring your scoring ability to the next level, you need to learn more advanced techniques to turn your game to a skill-based game more than a luck-based one.

Most bowlers choose to first incorporate the advanced technique of the hook ball into their game.

With the hook ball, you attain greater control over the movement of the ball, and which pins are knocked down.

When you are limited to sending the ball straight on towards the pins (while avoiding the gutter, of course), you are also limited in your ability to score in difficult situations.

There are few people that can consistently bowl strikes with a straight technique. It is often more due to the luck of how the ball strikes the pins, the spin on the ball, and how the pins move once they’re hit.

If you’re unlucky, you may find you’re more often left with a nasty split that is difficult (if not impossible with a straight technique) to convert into a spare. Even if you are able to spare it up, you still will find it difficult to compete with players that can consistently throw strikes.

That’s where the hook ball comes in.

With the hook ball technique, you add spin to the ball, and use it to send the ball on the path you choose.

Creating the hook is controlled by the way you release the ball.

Generally speaking, you want to release the ball with your thumb close to the bottom. At the same time, use your fingers to add spin to the ball. With the right amount of spin, the ball will travel in a straight line, until it reaches the “break point”.

The break point is the point in the ball’s travels where, instead of continuing on in a straight line, it first arcs slightly outward, then curves back towards the pins you targeted.

To have a good hook ball technique, you need to take an in-depth look at your bowling habits. You’ll need to determine your typical axis tilt and rotation — or the amount of horizontal and vertical spin you typically add to your shots.

You can get an idea of these by the position of your hand when you release the ball — get someone else to watch or take pictures or video of you while you throw several shots.

The information you gain will help you to make corrections to improve your hook ball game. You’ll also have a better idea of the right bowling ball for your style.

Urethane-made balls are ideal for the hook game. Their texture helps you to add the right amount of spin to each throw.

After you have an appropriate bowling ball, practice is the next step. Only through repetition can you learn how each part of the hook ball works together to get the results you want. The spin, speed, rotation, and location all determine how successful the throw will be.

It does take an investment of time, but once you’ve mastered the hook ball, you’ll have a bowling technique available to you that will help you to score higher, making more strikes, and giving you a greater chance of hitting difficult spares.

Pressure and Hardware Mounted Stair and Safety Gates Review

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Safety and stair gates are useful to keep your children and pets from dangerous situations and areas within the home. The two main types of safety gates are pressure mounted and hardware mounted, yet there are still many important considerations when choosing the stair and safety gates that are right for your home.

Pressure mounted safety gates are easily moved and relocated to various areas of the home because they are only installed temporarily. Comparatively, hardware mounted stair gates are not moved as they are more permanent fixtures and this marks the major difference between the two gate types.

Pressure mounted safety gates are wedged within a doorway or between two walls, secured only by tension which is manually adjusted. Therefore, no tools are required and installation is extremely quick and easy. Damage to walls is minimized with pressure mounted gates. Hardware mounted safety and stair gates are semi-permanently attached using brackets and/or screws. Installation is more complicated and requires various tools and hardware. Additionally, there is more damage to walls, which can be repaired with putty and paint. Pressure mounted gates work best when wedged between two surfaces that are parallel and level, whereas installation of hardware mounted stair gates is more flexible.

Because pressure mounted safety gates are not permanently attached to the wall, they are less secure than those that are hardware mounted. Additionally, to ensure safety, it is important to continually adjust the tension. Pressure mounted gates are best used in less hazardous locations, such as between rooms or at the bottom of stairs. Only hardware mounted stair gates should be used at the top of stairways.

Both pressure mounted and hardware mounted safety and stair gates are available in a wide variety of options. Gates range in size (both height and width), there are different methods of adjusting width (e.g., sliding panels or knobs), and optional attachments and hardware are available for most options. Although both are adjustable and optional extensions are available, pressure mounted gates are typically used for narrow openings (two to three feet), whereas hardware mounted gates are often used in wider openings.

Safety and stair gates are manufactured using a variety of materials including metal, wood, plastic, wire, and mesh. However, metal and wood options are recommended by this author for the strength, durability and beauty. Most manufacturers provide a host of finish and color options to suit the design of your home.

Girls Want To Have Fun Too So Choose Some Practical Clothes

Friday, December 4th, 2009

From being quite small most little girls love wearing pretty dresses and shoes that make them feel like a princess and the stores are full of these beautiful clothes. However, these outfits are not appropriate for every occasion. Inexpensive play outfits are far more practical for little girls when they are taking part in more physical activities.

The idea of practicality doesnt seem to carry much weight with the rich and famous in this world: check out the recent visit of Suri Cruise when she went to spend a day with Posh Spice’s boys – I love to see little girls in pretty dresses with matching accessories but it surely doesn’t fit the bill for a boys “play day”!

Some years ago I owned and ran a preschool that included an outdoor play area which meant that the children could enjoy physical activities and let off a bit of steam from time to time. But this was inhibited by the type of clothes that many of the girls wore for playschool, despite my pleas to the parents. Climbing frames and bikes were frequently a risk which lead to restrictions for girls with unsuitable shoes and long dresses.

There were many ways in which I saw accidents occur: a long dress or skirt would be trapped in a bike wheel and result in a fall. Other children found it difficult to avoid treading on long skirts or dresses. A girl’s enjoyment of the slide soon came to an end if her dress became entangled with part of the slide and caused an accident.

But it’s not just at preschool where dresses are inappropriate wear for your daughter. Think about when you go to the park or on an inflatable bouncer or even to a theme park. Many of these activities involve climbing, running and other energetic activities that little girls enjoy doing just as much as boys. It is far better to put your little girl in trousers or shorts as they do not inhibit movement or cause a hazard.

Think also about how easy it is to ruin your little girl’s favorite pretty dress if she’s doing something that involves strenuous activity. Just suppose that she gets it stained with ink or paint or glue. Or what if she does enjoy the recreation yard at preschool and she tears a hole in it while she is on a climbing frame. Wouldn’t she (and you!) be very emotional and upset about that?

When I ran a preschool I always advised moms (and dads!) to put their children in practical, inexpensive clothes so that their kids could enjoy all the activities without worrying about their clothes getting dirty or spoiled. Little girls should be able to enjoy the physical aspects of play with the same sense of freedom and adventure as little boys.

So save those cool trendy clothes for birthdays, parties, visits to friends and relatives and even that trip to the mall. And include some cheap and practical baby girl clothes in her wardrobe as well as the fancy and exotic ones.
