In today’s society everyone likes to throw away their stuff, but there is something special about our baby items that makes us want to keep them. In addition to that, when you are pregnant, there will be a handful amount of people satisfied enough to give you their old nursery furniture and crib bedding. Because babies are expensive business, be grateful for those offerings of baby bedding and baby cribs. First verify whether the bedding is safe. Then you may use it for the child.

Whether it is a Moses basket or a crib, your baby’s first crib is the most memorable. You’ll probably be taking some time to refinish the crib if you’ve been given a hand-me-down. If so, this is the perfect time to make sure that the bed is safe. The baby bedding may look new. Have you checked its safety? If you are using a wicker cradle, check the ends to make sure there are no loose or broken bits and that all the connections are secure, and always use a new mattress because these wear out quickest. When you fit the skirt, see that there are no loose ends or things that can go into the mouth of the baby.

Any loose threads or pieces of material may end up in the child’s mouth, so when the drapes have been fitted, be sure to pick these things up. It is suggested by the Juvenile Products Manufacturer’s Association (JPMA) in America, and also by and British Standards (BS) in the United Kingdom, that you should not use old blankets and baby furniture if you can possibly replace them. Purchase new bed goods for your child’s safety. JPMA seal of approval or the BS ‘Kite’ mark are the products that you should stick with as they have been extensively tested for safety and meet all requirement guidelines.

I don’t have a problem with hand-me-downs myself; I just make sure to thoroughly inspect them for safety. Anyway, it isn’t good for the environment to throw away perfectly decent furniture and baby bedding. Since your baby will be in his or her crib for extended periods of time it is important you spend the time inspecting it. You need to take all the necessary precautions to ensure your babies safety and well being. It’s extremely vital to go over your baby equipment checking for safety issues, and here are some guidelines for you to follow. The most important issue is that of paint, check for lead paint, and any chipped or peeling pieces and that the surface is smooth to the touch to prevent baby’s clothes from catching. Make sure that the baby’s head does not get caught between the bars of the crib by making sure the spindles are no farther than 2 and 3/8 inches apart and that the header and footer boards are securely attached with no spaces for the baby to get caught in. The joints and fixings should be tight .Otherwise the crib will wobble. It should only take one hand to raise and lower the side rail. Once raised, it should be fully secured. 22 inches is the height recommended for the top of the side rail to extend over the crib mattress, and for heavens sake make sure the mattress is not only firm but clean.

I will always buy a new, snug fit mattress for a new baby. Nursery bedding may cause babies to suffocate, so you have to be careful to tie the strings of the bumper tightly or don’t use a bumper at all. Don’t use comforters, quilts or other heavy bedding for babies that are under a year old since this can cause overheating. Place a thermometer in the room in addition to using a combination of blankets and sheets. You will be astonished at a baby’s ability to climb and reach things, so cribs must be kept away from curtains, window blinds, cords, lamps or nearby furniture onto which they might lift themselves.

Always remember to enjoy every moment with your baby, they grow up before you even realize it.
